As of the scholastic year 2013-14 we will no longer be following the ECDL certification system but we’ll be following the ‘New ECDL’ which is the new ECDL certification that will start on the 1st October 2013. New ECDL is made up of 2 sections: The Base Modules (of which there are 4) and the Standard Modules (of which there are 5). In order to acquire the New ECDL certificate, students will need to get a pass mark in the 4 Base Modules and ANY 3 from the Standard Modules: a total of 7 ECDL exams.

However, as of the 2013-14 scholastic year, students from form 1 to form 3 will be trained in the 4 Base Modules (which are compulsory) and ONLY 2 of the Standard Modules (Presentation and Using Databases), a total of 6 ECDL exams. This means that students attending Form 1, 2 and 3 during this scholastic year (2013-14) will need to sit for 1 Standard module (either: Web Editing, Image Editing or IT Security) at a private computer centre.

These changes were not brought about by the ICT teachers at San Gorg Preca College Hamrun Boys, but came from the Education Division Floriana in conjunction with ECDL Malta. We were only informed about these changes during July 2013. For the first time this year, Form 1 students will be offered the chance to sit for a New ECDL exam (Presentation) at the end of the scholastic year. Also for the first time, Form 2 will be able to sit for Word Processing at the end of the scholastic year. As per previous years, Form 3, 4 and 5 (scholastic year 2013-14) will be able to sit for the usual ECDL exams.
